Ancient Mediterranean World: Funding

It is considered highly desirable that graduate students in ancient history gain firsthand experience though travel to the Mediterranean. The Edward L. Ryerson and Eric Cochrane funds provide travel fellowships for independent study. More organized programs are offered each summer by the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and the American Academy in Rome. Both institutions also offer competitive residential fellowships for one-year (and, in the case of the Academy in Rome, for two years). Students are also eligible for a wide range of university and national fellowships designed to support their research and dissertation writing.
