Britain: Conferences
While the workshops at the University of Chicago provide a rigorous and exciting forum to present and discuss recent scholarship, students are strongly encouraged to present work at national and international conferences. Conference listings can frequently be found in the regular email announcements on H-Albion. The North American Conference on British Studies has a yearly national conference. The various regional branches of this organization also hold yearly, and in some cases twice yearly, conferences. The regional conferences, all listed on the national website, provide more intimate and congenial settings for graduate students to present early work. There are many more specialized conferences where one can present and hear papers on British History. The Sixteenth Century Conference, the Eighteenth Century Conference, the Victorian Studies Conference, the Shakespeare Association Conference, and the Renaissance Conference all host yearly events. In addition there is often much work on Britain presented at the American Historical Association, the Social Science History, the American Political Science Association, the Economic History Association, and the Modern Languages Association annual conferences.
When in the United Kingdom you should avail yourself of the active seminar series associated with British and Irish Universities. The Institute of Historical Research has an extremely active set of seminars which Chicago faculty and students may attend, as we hold memberships.
