International: Faculty

Department Faculty

Bruce Cumings is the faculty member primarily identified with international history, and works on international, East Asian, and modern Korean history.

Many other history faculty members incorporate international or transnational themes as a significant component of their scholarship or teaching. Ralph Austen in African history does work on European imperialism, while Dipesh Chakrabarty’s work on South Asia deals with colonial legacies and postcolonial theories. Susan Burns and Prasenjit Duara study East Asian history from transnational and post-structuralist perspectives, which Moishe Postone also employs in his work on Germany, anti-Semitism, and contemporary global transformations. In European history, John Boyer, Rachel Fulton, and Michael Geyer have all incorporated international, transnational, or transcultural approaches, as Walter Kaegi and John Woods, have done in Byzantine, Islamic, and Middle Eastern history. Among the Americanists, Kathleen Conzen works on immigration history, while Thomas Holt and Julie Saville work on Caribbean history and comparative slavery and emancipations.
