Midwest Russian History Workshop
The Midwest Russian History Workshop meets twice a year at Chicago, Urbana, Ann Arbor, Bloomington, and other sites in the Midwest. It is attended by faculty and graduate students, and features presentations of work in progress by scholars and advanced graduate students as well as roundtables on topics of general interest. Most recent Chicago presentations at the MidWest Workshop include:

American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies
The annual convention of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies is held at different locations in North America each November. The next meeting is in Toronto in November 2003. A number of advanced Chicago graduate students and recent Chicago PhDs have presented papers at recent meetings the AAASS (at Pittsburgh in 2002; Crystal City, Washington DC, in 2001; Denver in 2000)

Midwest branch of the AAASS
The Midwest branch of the AAASS also holds annual conventions at different Midwest locations.
Every year, the University of Chicago itself is the site of a number of conferences on Russian/Soviet matters. Recent events include:

organized by Sheila Fitzpatrick, October 12, 2002, with participation
of Dietrich Beyrau (Tuebingen), Mark von Hagen (Columbia), Peter Holquist
(Cornell), Joshua Sanborn (Lafayette), Michael Geyer (Chicago) and Mark
Edele (graduate student, Chicago).
"Armenians and the End of the Ottoman Empire" - conference
organized by Ronald Suny, March 17-19 2000
A number of conferences fully or partly funded by Sheila Fitzpatrick's
recent Distinguished Achievement Award from the Mellon Foundation and
dealing with Russian and Soviet issues in a comparative perspective
will be held in the next three years (2003/4 - 2005/6). They include:
Conference on "Everyday Practices in Modern Europe," organized by Sheila Fitzpatrick and Leora Auslander at the University of Chicago on November 16-18, 2003, with participation of Russianists; Catriona Kelly (Oxford), Stephen Lovell (London) and Susan Reid (Sheffield) as well as Alf Luedtke (Erfurt/Goettingen) Nicole La Pierre (Chicago) Rudy Koshar (Michigan), Richard Bosworth (Western Australia) Dipesh Chakrabarty (Chicago) and David Scobey (Michigan).
Workshop conference on "History of Emotions", organized
by Sheila Fitzpatrick at the University of Chicago on November 24, 2003,

Sheila Fitzpatrick and George Chauncey, to be held at the University
of Chicago on September 17-18, 2004
In connection with the Russian Studies Workshop, there will also be a conference at the University of Chicago in October, 2004 on "Households" with participation of Gijs Kessler (Amsterdam), Dominique Arel (Brown), Wendy Goldman (Carnegie-Mellon), David Ransel (Indiana), and Greta Bucher (War College - check)
