Transportation

The University of Chicago is seven miles south of Chicago's downtown.

The campus faces lake Michigan and is in Hyde Park, a neighborhood bounded by Lake Michigan on the east, Cottage Grove Avenue on the west, 61st street on the south, and 50th Street on the north.

When Arriving at Midway Airport

  1. Omega Airport Shuttle operates minivans directly to campus, making stops at the airport and at various points in Hyde Park. Please check the Omega Shuttle website for current fares and schedules.
  2. If you take a taxi directly to campus on Garfield boulevard (a.k.a. 55th st.), the cost is about $30.
  3. For public transportation take the #55 Garfield bus at the stop at the airport. You will need exact change or you can buy a transportation card from the vending machines in the station. Trip takes about 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

When Arriving at O'Hare International Airport

  1. Omega Airport Shuttle operates minivans directly to campus, at the Bus/Shuttle area on the lower level and at various points in Hyde Park. Please check the Omega Shuttle website for current fares and schedules.
  2. Public Transportation
    Take CTA train from lower-level terminus; get transit card; take a 50-minute train ride to the Loop, exit at Washington or Jackson; walk one block east to State street; take the #6 Jackson Park Express bus, using card; exit bus at 59th & Stony Island; walk west (2 blocks to International House; 5 blocks to the History office).During rush hours, additional buses service campus. http://transitchicago.com/ (for information on fares and timetables)
  3. Take CTA from lower level; take train to loop, exit at Jackson; hail cab to Hyde Park (cost $15-25).
  4. 3. A taxi from O'Hare will cost about$45-55, or more with expressway delays.

From Downtown

  1. MetraRail runs rail service from the Millenium Street and Van Buren Stations to Hyde Park via the Metra Electric line.
  2. Hail a cab downtown. The cost to Hyde Park will be $20-25. Ask for "59th and University" as the cross-streets
  3. Take a bus from downtown. The #6 bus runs regularly from State Street to Hyde Park. Additional rush hour busses also service the University. For schedules and fares visit the CTA website.

When Arriving by Car

  1. From O'Hare airport, take I-90 (Kennedy Expressway) south; stay on the Kennedy as it merges into I-94 (Dan Ryan) near the Loop; exit the Ryan at Garfield (55th street); turn east (left) until you pass Cottage Grove and enter campus.
  2. From Midway, exit the airport left onto Cicero Avenue, turn right onto 55th street (Garfield blvd.) and continue east for approximately 50 blocks until you pass Cottage Grove and enter campus.
  3. From the Loop, take Lake Shore Drive south to the 57th street exit; turn right onto Columbus Drive, which curves around the north and west sides of the Museum of Science and Industry; after passing the museum, look for the "To I-94 (Dan Ryan)" sign; turn right onto the Plaisance, which runs between 59th & 60th streets; the University will be on your right. You can also exit Lake Shore Dr, at 47th, 50th, or 53rd if your destination is further north in Hyde Park.
  4. From the south, take I-94 (Dan Ryan Expressway); exit the Ryan at Garfield (55th street); turn east (right) until you pass Cottage Grove and enter campus.

Campus Parking

The saying goes that in Hyde Park you can't park and you can't hide. Finding Street parking near campus is very difficult during morning hours when school is in session. You might have success finding non-metered parking on the Midway Plaisance between 59th & 60th streets, but expect a walk after finding a place.
