Applicants who receive offers of admission are invited to visit on History Day, held in March (March 7th in 2011). On History Day admitted students have the opportunity to meet other admitted students in their cohort, meet with faculty in their field, speak with current students, and are given an overview of the program with plenty of time for questions.
Prospective students who are interested in a PhD in History are welcome to make arrangements to visit campus. David Goodwine, our program coordinator, can help arrange meetings with faculty in your areas of interest as well as informal conversations with some of our graduate students. Please give David at least two-weeks notice of your visit.
Most students apply without visiting campus. If you're offered admission, you'll be invited to "History Day" where you will have the opportunity to meet with professors and students. If you wish to visit before applying to our program, the Graduate Affairs Administrator is available to answer specific questions related to the History PhD program. For advice on applying to graduate school, we suggest that you contact your college advisor, professors you have worked with, or career counselor at your undergraduate or MA institution.
Please review the faculty pages and let David know which faculty you would like to meet during your visit. Faculty who are on leave might not be available for meetings. You may also wish to schedule a meeting with the graduate student administrator if you have questions about the structure of the program or funding. Please let David know if you’d like to include this meeting.
October and November are the ideal times to visit campus. Summer visits can be coordinated, but faculty and current students may not be available for meetings during vacation times. If you wish to attend classes, please be aware of our academic calendar. We regret that we cannot schedule mid-December through March when we will be reviewing admissions files.
The Undergraduate Admissions office conducts Campus Tours that prospective graduate students are welcome to take. You may also be interested in a variety of tours offered around the Hyde Park Campus.
