The University of Chicago is justly called the teacher of teachers, because of the number of Chicago graduates who go on to teach and conduct research at colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. Together with the support you will receive from your dissertation director during your academic job search, there are several services to help you find an appointment as a professional historian and teacher.
To receive e-mails of job and workshop announcements you may subscribe yourself to: https://listhost.uchicago.edu/mailman/listinfo/historyjobs.
Paper copies of job announcements received by the department (adjunct openings, postdoctoral fellowships, and tenure-track appointments) are kept in the History Department office room 332 of the Social Sciences Building. The Chronicle of Higher Education Career Network is available on-line, or you can browse the paper copy in the History office, SSRB 330. Also, a good, annotated bibliography of reference books related to job hunting is available through the Career Advising and Placement Service Office (CAPS).
In late spring or early autumn, Historys Teaching, Fellowships, and Placement Committee offers a workshop on the academic job search for students who are currently on the job market or anticipate being on the market in a years time. The workshop covers such issues as elements of an application and a dossier; tenure-track versus postdoctoral positions; making the short list; interviewing; and campus visits.
In late November or early December, students who will be interviewing at the American Historical Associations annual meeting or other conferences can participate in Mock Interviews with members of the History Department faculty. Contact the History Department office to schedule an interview.
After the American Historical Association's January convention, the committee meets to discuss on-campus job talks with students who interviewed at AHA.
Throughout the year, the History Graduate Student Association offers bi-monthly professionalization workshops on issues important to historians, such as teaching, publishing, etc... you may benefit from presenting your on-campus job talk at a social sciences graduate workshop.
CAPS offers autumn quarter workshops, sample cover letters, curricula vitæ, and resumes to download, and a list of useful publications for graduate students seeking both academic and non-academic positions. You can also make an appointment with a CAPS counselor who specializes in career opportunities outside academia for masters and doctoral degree students in the social sciences. An extensive career library and reference librarian is also available at CAPS office. CAPS is located in Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th Street, or telephone the office at 773/702-7040.
The University of Chicago has contracted with Interfolio, Inc. to maintain credentials files, sometimes known as the dossier, for students seeking jobs or fellowships. A confidential credentials file allows each of your recommenders to write one letter which is stored and may be used repeatedly for any period of time. You may also elect to keep copies of transcripts, teaching evaluations, or sample syllabi in your file. You select which materials in the file to send with each fellowship or job application. Letters and other materials can be updated as you progress through your graduate studies. You can consult with your dissertation director or placement committee for advice on preparing the dossier.
Eighty percent of History students who graduated in the past six years have accepted academic positions (postdoctoral fellowships, visiting appointments, or tenure-track faculty); fourteen percent of our graduates work outside academia, and six percent of graduates are actively seeking a position.
