The University of Chicago and the University of Chicago Press are proud to announce the establishment of the Neil Harris Endowment Fund, created on the occasion of the retirement from teaching of Professor Harris. It will celebrate his career by supporting the work of exciting new scholarship published by one of the leading university presses in the world. The innovative scholarship of Professor Harris, the Preston and Sterling Morton Professor of History and Art History at the University of Chicago, has consistently engaged with visual culture in art, architecture, and popular culture. His many publications have served as a leading example to students and scholars crossing disciplinary boundaries. To honor this legacy, the Neil Harris Endowment Fund will support the publication of illustrated interdisciplinary books by the University of Chicago Press, primarily in history, but also occasionally in related disciplines, such as art history and architecture.

The publication of well-illustrated books grows ever more costly. There is much work involved in obtaining permissions, and reproduction expenses continue to escalate. At the same time, much of the most vital new interdisciplinary scholarship, some strongly influenced by the research and publications of Professor Harris, features copious illustration. Bringing such work into print often requires authors to seek external funding to subsidize the cost of reproduction. This is a particular constraint for younger scholars who may not yet have the ability to attract necessary outside funds and this is an especially acute problem for works which cross disciplinary boundaries. The University of Chicago Press has been a leader in the publication of such works for over a century. In its support of these University of Chicago Press publications, the Neil Harris Endowment Fund will play a crucial role in sustaining and enriching the fields to which Neil Harris has contributed so much.

Books subsidized by the fund will carry the following acknowledgement on the copyright page:

Publication of this book has been aided by a grant from the Neil Harris Endowment Fund, which honors the innovative scholarship of Neil Harris, Preston and Sterling Morton Professor of History, Emeritus, The University of Chicago. The Fund is supported by contributions from the students, colleagues, and friends of Neil Harris.

We seek both to honor Professor Harris with the largest participation possible and to raise a substantial sum to ensure that the Fund will do meaningful work for many years to come. To achieve both of these goals, contributions both small and large are gratefully accepted.

Contributions may be directed to the University of Chicago and should be accompanied by instructions that they are designated for the Neil Harris Endowment Fund for the University of Chicago Press. Checks should be made out to The University of Chicago. Please print out the form on this site, fill out and include with your gift. Please send to: Noel Salinger, Associate Vice-President, Development and Alumni Relations, The University of Chicago, 5801 S. Ellis, Suite 306A, Chicago, IL 60637.

The principal of the endowment will be managed by the University of Chicago on behalf of the Press; endowment payout, as determined by current University policy, will be fully available to the Press in perpetuity. Books published with the fund will be at the sole discretion of the University of Chicago Press.

It will be difficult for us to reach all those who may wish to contribute. Please forward this information to anyone who may wish to make a donation. We plan to announce the fund in Spring 2008 when a symposium is planned in honor of Professor Harris. We are grateful to all those who will participate to honor him.
