Theresa Mah (馬靜儀), PhD '99, is the Democratic candidate for representative of the 2nd District in Illinois. Theresa is currently unopposed in the general election and will be the first Asian American legislator in state history. She will discuss her career in public service and her decision to run for office at the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics on Monday, May 16, at 6 PM.
Mah won with 51.22 percent percent of the vote in a district that includes the Back of the Yards, Bridgeport, Brighton Park, Chinatown, McKinley Park, and Pilsen; it is one of the most diverse districts in the state.
Mah's dissertation, "Buying into the Middle Class: Residential Segregation and Racial Formation in the United States, 1920–1964," was directed by Thomas C. Holt.
