March 30, 2026

Yasmeen Mobayed

History PhD Candidate Yasmeen Mobayed has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Segal Fund for Social Sciences Research on Military Personnel Grant. Each year, the Division of the Social Sciences selects one project for a dissertation research support grant of $5,000. Recipients may be PhD students in any University of Chicago SSD PhD-granting program whose work focuses on personnel or military organization.

Yasmeen's project, Beyond the Battlefield: The Middle East Supply Center, Wartime Economies, and the Institutional Legacies of Military Governance, explores how logistical and supply institutions operate as powerful social actors, shaping civilian governance and institutional norms well beyond the theaters of war. Yasmeen's project further examines how the practices of military-logistical organization illuminate the way military institutions govern labor, resources, and civilian populations under wartime conditions.

Congratulations, Yasmeen!
