Departmental Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy
History education is not simply a matter of transmitting facts. Much of the learning in a history course takes place by practice; students learn to interpret primary sources, make historical arguments, and craft historical narrative by doing it themselves. Delegating those tasks to a machine compromises that learning. The department encourages caution and clarity in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom. Faculty and instructors will specify their policies and expectations regarding the use of AI through a syllabus statement. In the absence of such a statement, the assumption will be that any use of generative AI in the class is prohibited. Faculty and instructors will refrain from any use of generative AI for grading student assignments.
