History Graduate Student Association

We invite all PhD students in the Department of History to participate in the History Graduate Student Association. HGSA serves two primary functions:

  • To advocate for graduate-student interests to the faculty and administration by engaging in a dialogue about what works well and what needs improvement in our collective experience. Each year we complete an annual report to collect student views and concerns and deliver that report, along with our recommendations for improvement, to GSAC and the Department.
  • To sponsor social and cultural events that help to form friendships and to put aside academic stress from time to time. We invite you to propose events and request funds. Please email hgsa@uchicago.edu with your ideas and requests.

We have an elected board:

Benjamin Montano
Brigitte McFarland
Kate Reed
Natalia Niedmann Alvarez
Daniel Fernandez

HGSA has a low threshold of commitment for interested students outside the core group—you are welcome to participate to the level that you are willing and able. Feel free to contact us through hgsa@uchicago.edu with ideas on building connections with faculty and administration, to propose a professionalization series or one-time event, or to plan a social or cultural event. In the past, we have also been able to support the PhD student/ candidate community in a variety of tangible ways, including the outfitting of the History soccer team, and the supplying and maintaining of the PhD student lounge.

The Social Sciences Division provides 100 percent of HGSA's budget.
